The Auckland-based Blues have won the race for Sonny Bill Williams' signature with the 30-year-old dual international shifting north from the Chiefs.

The centre, who is missing this season of Super Rugby in a bid for gold at the Rio Olympics with the All Blacks Sevens, has signed a three-year deal with NZ Rugby and the franchise.

Williams, whose mother lives in Auckland, played for the Crusaders in 2011 and Chiefs in 2012 before playing two seasons in the NRL with the Sydney Roosters.
